12/5 for Gunners to hold United

only Manchester City have conceded fewer than Arsenal at home

Fifth-placed Arsenal entertain second-placed Manchester United on Sunday in a game that may be crucial to the long-term success of both sides. Defeat for Arsenal could leave them seven points outside the Champions League places while United may find themselves six points off the lead if they fail to take something from the Emirates Stadium.

Thierry Henry is a doubt for the hosts with a calf injury and Mikel Arteta is definitely out. Thomas Vermaelen, however, has an outside chance of returning to bolster Arsene Wenger’s defensive options. Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna, Kieran Gibbs, Andre Santos and Francis Coquelin remain on the sidelines while Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh are away on international duty.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be without Nemanja Vidic, Anderson, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher but England duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could both return to the starting line-up.

The Red Devils have won seven and lost only one of their previous nine meetings with Arsenal. They have picked up more points and conceded fewer goals than any other Premier League side on their travels and have scored, on average, almost two goals per game away from Old Trafford. However, only Manchester City have conceded fewer than Arsenal at home and United will need to be at their best to take all three points from North London.

The Gunners will be hoping to avenge the humiliating 8-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United last August and avoiding a third consecutive league defeat will be Arsene Wenger’s priority on Sunday. The draw is available at 12/5 with Bet 365 and neither side would be too disappointed with such an outcome.

Robin Van Persie needs just one more goal to improve on his previous best Premier League goal tally of 18. He is 6/4 with Ladbrokes to score at any time during the game.
