8/5 for Reds to book Wembley return

Liverpool tend to save their best performances for the bigger games

The first of the weekend’s two FA Cup semi-finals comes in the form of a Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.

Everton’s 3-0 loss at Anfield in March is one of only two defeats sustained in their last 17 games in all competitions. In contrast, Liverpool have lost six of their last eight league fixtures and they will be hoping that the form book does, in fact, go out of the window when it comes to derby games between rivals. Along with local bragging rights, the winners will take a place in the FA Cup final against either Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea on May 5th.

Having already secured a Carling Cup victory this term, Kenny Dalglish will know that an FA Cup triumph would go some way towards salvaging relative success from an otherwise poor season for the Reds.

Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper Brad Jones is expected to start in the absence of suspended duo Pepe Reina and Alexander Doni. Long-term absentees Lucas Leiva and Charlie Adam are sidelined with injury but Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger should be available for selection having recently returned from layoffs of their own.

Everton’s on-loan midfielder Steven Pienaar is cup-tied and Jack Rodwell is out with a hamstring injury but Tim Cahill, Leighton Baines and Nikica Jelavic should all return to David Moyes’ starting line-up after being rested during last weekend’s 4-0 win over Sunderland. Jelavic has scored five goals in his first 10 games for the Toffees and Paddy Power offer odds of 7/1 for the Croatian to break the deadlock.

Despite maintaining one of the best defensive records in the league this year, Liverpool have only kept one clean sheet in their last 12 games. However, they have also been far better in front of goal lately and, with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez having been rested at the weekend, they will fancy their chances of breaching Everton’s defence. William Hill offer generous odds of 19/20 for both teams to score during the game.

Liverpool tend to save their best performances for the bigger games and they have already beaten Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton this season. They are available at 8/5 with Ladbrokes to win in 90 minutes. Although form suggests otherwise, the potential match-winners in Kenny Dalglish’s side provide a distinct advantage in a game that promises to be a tense and hard-fought affair.
