Arsenal swoop for Michael Essien in loan deal
Arsenal have made a surprise deadline day swoop for Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as Arsene Wenger looks to plug the gap left by Alex Song.
Essien has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and has yet to feature for The Blues this season, he has been linked with a £7million move to Fenerbahce in recent days but Chelsea are thought to prefer a loan deal, leaving Arsenal in pole position.
The Gunners have also been linked with a move for Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote with Sky Bet making the Emirates club as short as 1/3 in the betting to sign him this summer. Interestingly, Chelsea are second-favourites at odds of 10/1 and could make a late bid if Essien was to move to Arsenal.
Theo Walcott has been the subject of intense media speculation over the last week, but despite refusing to sign a new contract at Ashburton Grove Sky Bet now offer odds of 1/6 that he stays at Arsenal past the closure of the summer transfer window.
“There was never a hard-line approach with Theo, it was always a soft-line approach, but with respect to our wage structure,” said Wenger on the subject of Walcott’s contract negotiations.
“If we don't respect our wage structure, we will go nowhere. We always wanted him to stay, and we still want it now.”
