Cole odds-on to be benched for World Cup

After Roy Hodgson’s comments about Ashley Cole’s place in the England team the Chelsea full-back is now a best price of just 3/5 not to start his country’s opening World Cup match this summer.

Cole has been struggling to start regularly for Chelsea this season with Jose Mourinho preferring Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back and that looks to have cost him his England place with Hodgson stating: "For years people have been understudy to Ashley, now it's Ashley's turn to sit back."

That statement has led bookmaker to price Cole at just 3/5 not to be in the starting XI when England take on Italy in June.

His most likely replacement in the first team will be Leighton Baines who is enjoying another impressive season with Everton. There is certainly some value in the market though as Coral are offering 11/10 on Baines starting the contest with Italy.

The wildcard in the market is the currently uncapped 18-year-old Luke Shaw who has been linked with a call up to the national side. Shaw is a huge 40/1 with Sky Bet to start the first match of the World Cup and 8/1 with Ladbrokes just to be included in the squad.
