Costa's Atletico return likely

Diego Costa wants to return to his former club Atletico Madrid this summer with the bookmakers believing that a move could definitely be on the cards. The Spanish international striker revealed in an interview in early June that he had been informed by Chelsea boss Antonio Conte he could leave the club this summer. These latest developments come after the two had a training ground bust-up in January amid speculation that Costa was the target for a big-money move to China. However he has now stated his desire to move back to Los Colcheneros and the odds suggest this move is a goer.

Looking at the odds with Skybet, Costa is just 7/4 to head back to Madrid by the end of the summer transfer window whilst he is priced at 9/4 to still be a Chelsea player. As you can see there is not much in it terms of the prices on offer and that probably reflects a number of factors that are complicating the deal. First of all, Atletico have a transfer ban that means that any players they sign this summer would be unable to play until January 2018. This would be an unattractive prospect for Costa and in a World Cup year, he would want regular game time to secure his place in the Spain starting line-up. It also begs the question as to whether or not Diego Simeone would be prepared to spend the big money on his former striker knowing he would not be able to play him until half way through the season.

Secondly Costa's departure looks as though it will rest on whether or not Chelsea can first bring in a big name striker to replace him. They have been widely linked for a move for Romelu Lukaku this summer and the Belgian is just 2/7 in places to make the move back to Stamford Bridge. However the speculation around that deals seems to have quietened down in recent weeks with reports suggesting that Chelsea and Everton are some way apart in their valuation of the player. With Chelsea also allegedly interested in Robert Lewandowski should he become available this summer, it appears as though there is still some uncertainty as to who will start the season as the Blues main striker.

There definitely looks to be something in backing Costa to leave Chelsea this summer. His relationship with Antonio Conte certainly looks a bit fraught and if all parties had their way, it's likely that Costa would indeed move back to Atletico. It may take some time to resolve all the issues and for Chelsea to bring in a replacement but taking the price of 7/4 that is currently on offer may be a wise investment.
