Depay set for Goodison switch?
Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has been strongly linked with a move to Everton in the January transfer window. The 22-year-old has rarely featured under Jose Mourinho this season and there is reported to be growing interest from Ronald Koeman in bringing his fellow countryman to Goodison Park.
Since arriving at Old Trafford in the June 2015, Depay has struggled to adapt to the rigours of English football and has not been able to command a regular place in the Manchester United starting XI. He came to Manchester in £25 million deal from PSV Eindhoven with a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in Europe after his 22 league goals helped PSV to their first league title since 2008. However he has never been able to replicate that form in the Premier League and has scored just twice in the league for United.
Everton boss Ronald Koeman is a well known admirer of Depay having spoken of him as a "great talent" and was first interested in securing his services whilst he was in charge of Southampton. Koeman has continued to speak glowingly of Depay since taking over at Goodison Park and the bookies' certainly believe he could bring his countryman to the club with Skybet offering odds of just 5/4 that Depay makes the switch in January. Everton's need for new attacking personnel was increased after winger Yannick Bolaise suffered a long term knee injury in the recent league meeting between Everton and United.
Koeman has gone on record speaking of the need for January reinforcements telling The Sun newspaper that: “Maybe it’s necessary that we need to sign somebody in that position, yes.
“We are looking for players to bring in different positions because we need to be stronger from January. For Bolasie it’s a big injury. He had a scan last Monday, and that showed he had damaged the cruciate ligaments — and maybe something more in his knee.
“We are looking for some good options and maybe it is more necessary now than it was before because we have lost Yannick for a long time.
Koeman has also been linked with a move for another Manchester United player in Morgan Schneiderlin, whom he managed at Southampton. A move for Depay however seems a much more like transfer to happen, given Everton's need to strengthen in that position and Depay seemingly completely out of favour at United.
