Gerrard tipped for Liverpool return
Steven Gerrard has been strongly linked with a move back to Liverpool after announcing he will leave LA Galaxy upon the expiry of his contract. The former Liverpool captain scored five goals in his 34 appearances in his 18-month spell with he MLS outfit though he was unable to land any silverware in his spell Stateside. The Los Angeles side had hoped the 36-year-old would sign a new contract after their defeat in the play-off defeat to the Colorado Rapids but Gerrard has opted to seek pastures new.
A return to Liverpool has been strongly mooted in a player-coach capacity with Jurgen Klopp having said in the past that Gerrard would be "always welcome" back at Anfield and returning to his boyhood club would provide him with the perfect opportunity to complete his coaching badges. Given the way Liverpool's season has gone so far, it could even allow him to claim the Premier League winners medal that has always eluded him with the Reds sitting at the top of the Premier League. Whether or not Gerrard could adapt to Klopp's pressing style of play remains to be seen but he would no doubt provide a good influence in the dressing room. Some of the bookmakers have Liverpool odds-on to be Gerrard's next club with both Skybet and BetVictor offering odds of 8/13. However the move is available at a more attractive 21/10 with Paddy Power, a best price in the market.
Another club which has touted as a possible destination is Celtic, in a move which could see Gerrard link up with his former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. The move would allow the Huyton-born midfielder to return to the UK and prolong his playing career.
However Rodgers has played down the suggestion by stating “There is obviously some speculation. I would never say anything about what we would be doing business wise anyway but I think there is probably a natural focus on him because he is leaving and there is a period now where he can go to a club if he is leaving.
“We worked well together in our time at Liverpool and I have brought players here that I worked with before so people see it as a natural progression. But there is nothing in it"
The bookmakers however do not seem entirely convinced by the Celtic managers comments and the SPL leaders remain the second favourites for Gerrard's signature. Betfair and Paddy Power in fact put Celtic at the top of the market, available at evens. 888sport however have the move at much more lucrative price of 5/1 in a move that could certainly possess some value.
Newcastle are the other side linked with Gerrard's signature in a transfer that could see Gerrard link up with another of his former Liverpool bosses Rafa Benitez. With the Toon Army well placed for an instant return to the Premier League, the former Reds skipper could provide invaluable experience and leadership to the squad. He won the Champions League and FA Cup under Benitez's management and arguably played the best football of his career at Anfield whilst the Spaniard was in charge. However Gerrard's autobiography revealed that the pair never particularly enjoyed a close relationship. Would Gerrard really be that tempted to reunite with Benitez? It does not seem like a particularly viable option with Paddy Power pricing the move out at 7/1.
