Liverpool and Arsenal favourites to sign Didier Drogba
Bookmaker Paddy Power make Liverpool and Arsenal the 3/1 joint-favourites to be former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba’s next club.
The 34-year-old moved to Shanghai Shenhua in the summer after leading Chelsea to Champions League success, but he and teammate Nicolas Anelka are now caught up in a boardroom power struggle at the club and are thought to be keen to leave.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool are looking to bolster their attacking options after being caught short in the summer transfer window. The Gunners failed to replace last season’s top scorer Robin van Persie while Brendan Rodgers was left with just two recognised strikers after Andy Carroll moved to West Ham on a season-long loan.
Although the transfer window is now officially closed until January, Drogba would be available to sign for any club should his current contract with Shanghai be terminated, making him a free agent.
Other European clubs are thought to be keeping tabs on the Ivorian’s situation in China, with Juventus and Real Madrid each quoted at odds of 7/1 in Paddy Power’s betting market for Didier Drogba’s next club. Former club Marseille are priced at 9/1, while a return to Chelsea is quoted at 10/1 and a move to Anzhi Makhachkala is 14/1.
