Moyes's United joint favourites for Premier League title
With Manchester United on the verge of appointing David Moyes, bookmaker Paddy Power have released a series of odds that predict success for the Chosen One. The red devils are joint favourites at 15/8 with Manchester City to win the Premier League in 2014 and 8/11 to win a Major trophy next season.
When Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement was confirmed on Wednesday speculation around his successor took over the news agenda. Despite a spot of Mourinho fever, the Scot seems to have won the battle and is currently odds of 10/11 to steer Manchester United to the Premier League title for the club’s next trophy. United are odds of 10/3 to pick up the FA Cup as their next trophy, the cup that Moyes got closest to grabbing as Everton manager. Paddy Power are also giving odds of 5/6 that he’ll win over 2.5 major trophies as manager.
Moyes’ first challenge as manager will be sorting out a tricky situation with star player Wayne Rooney. The striker handed in a transfer request a few weeks ago and Moyes may have a tough job on his hands to keep hold of the man he acrimoniously lost when he was Everton manager. Rooney is 8/11 to not be Manchester United player at the end of the summer transfer window with Bayern Munich at 13/8 to sign him and Chelsea at 2/1. If Rooney does go then it could free up the funds to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, the Real Madrid man is now 6/4 for Manchester United to be his next club.
Ferguson’s haul of 38 trophies in 26 years sets a tough benchmark with the club’s fans and board now accustomed to success every season. The pressure will be on Moyes from the off and although the Glazers aren’t trigger happy like Roman Abramovich they will expect their new manager to hit the ground running. Paddy Power have given odds of the length of Moyes’s tenure, with over 1 year looking likely but the odds lengthening after the 2 year mark;
1/3 - Over 1 year
5/6 - Over 2 years
6/4 - Over 3 years
9/4 - Over 4 years
3/1 - Over 5 years
8/1 - Over 10 years
Although Moyes is a highly regarded manager and seen as having many of the qualities that a club like Manchester United require, the big question mark around him is experience in Europe. With Everton not having won a trophy during his reign and the club having only had limited exposure to the Europa League there will be big pressure on United’s performance in the Champions League. Paddy Power have given odds of 3/1 that the club will crash out in the group stages of the competition next season and odds of 7/1 that the Champions League will be the next trophy they win.
The biggest competition for the Manchester United hot seat came in the form of Jose Mourinho who is now 1/6 to return to Chelsea. With Moyes vs Mourinho set to be the new battle in the Premier League Paddy Power are giving odds on a match bet between the teams for next season with United at 4/6 and Chelsea at 11/10. Moyes will be hoping to repeat Sir Alex’s recent success over Chelsea and Paddy Power are giving odds on consecutive Premier League titles for United. With 2012-2013 in the bag the odds of the club winning two in a row are 7/4, three in a row 9/2, and four in a row 10/1.
A Paddy Power spokesman told Football Betting News “Moyes looks set to be the man chosen to take Manchester United forward and our odds suggest he’ll have a successful tenure. However, he won’t have the invincible status that Sir Alex had and a few early losses next season will make his seat at the table that bit hotter.”
