Odds on Poyet to Sunderland dramatically cut

There has been a dramatic turnaround in the betting on who will become the next Sunderland manager with Gustavo Poyet replacing Roberto Di Matteo as the strong odds-on favourite to take over at the Stadium of Light.

Di Matteo had been the runaway favourite for the job from the moment Paolo Di Canio was relieved of his duties but the Italian apparently rebuffed an initial approach from the Mackems. As a result Poyet is now first choice and is a best price of just 1/2 with 888sport to take the reins in the North East.

A cancellation of a television appearance by the Uruguayan on Tuesday night added more fuel to the fire in terms of talk that he is going to be offered the job on Weirside imminently.

Di Matteo remains his nearest competitor in the betting but he is all the way out at 12/1 with Paddy Power with former England boss Steve McClaren next in line at 14/1 with Sky Bet.

Poyet left his last job in management at Brighton and Hove Albion fairly acrimoniously but that has not stopped Premier League clubs courting his services with Fulham being heavily linked over the last few months although it looks like the former Chelsea player will be joining the Black Cats.
