Phelan favourite for Wigan job
Former Manchester United assistant-manager Mike Phelan has immediately been installed as favourite to replace Owen Coyle as manager of Wigan after the Scotsman was relieved from his duties on Monday.
Consecutive losses have left the Latics in 14th place in the Championship after 16 games, a situation chairman Dave Whelan views as unacceptable and now Phelan is a best price of 2/1 with Coral to be the man tasked with turning it around.
The one-time England international has never managed a team before but has a vast amount of coaching experience and was Sir Alex Ferguson’s right hand man at Old Trafford until his retirement earlier this year.
It appears to be a straight shoot-out between Phelan and Ian Holloway for the role at the DW Stadium with Holloway just behind the Lancastrian at 5/2 with Coral. Having taken both Blackpool and Crystal Palace into the Premier League against the odds Holloway has a proven track record and could be asked to repeat the feat.
Other names in the frame include Paul Jewell (11/1 with Sky Bet) and MK Dons boss Karl Robinson (12/1 with Sky Bet) but they look unlikely at this stage as Whelan looks set to choose between Phelan and Holloway.
