Premier League need convincing for winter World Cup

The controversial World Cup 2022 tournament is edging closer to being held in the winter with the Premier League seen as the key party to convince.

FIFA’s lobbying efforts are set to step up over the next few months and Paddy Power give odds of 11/10 that Blatter and co will get their way.

The much maligned FIFA president has tabled a motion for the governing body’s executive committee, in their meeting this October, to discuss the prospect of the first ever winter World Cup. Despite proposed air conditioned stadiums in Qatar the 50 degree heat will still be a huge issue for players, supporters and anyone not equipped with factor 1,000 sun cream.

However, the proposal has many opponents with the Premier League being the most vehemently against the idea. The influence of Richard Scudamore and his global product, along with the governing bodies of summer sports that’ll be impacted by the shift, are Blatter’s and FIFA vice President Jim Boyce’s biggest hurdle. As it stands a summer 2022 tournament is still odds on at 4/6.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; “As it stands we’re all set to be cowering from the sun at World Cup 2022 but don’t underestimate the mystical powers of Sepp Blatter – it could well be a Qatari winter wonderland as the backdrop for the biggest sporting event on the planet.”
