Provisional England squad announced
Roy Hodgson has named a 26-man provisional England squad ahead of this summer 's Euro 2016 tournament. Amongst the most surprising names to make the cut are Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and Newcastle winger Andros Townsend.
The likes of Phil Jagielka, Theo Walcott and Jermain Defore have all missed out with Hodgson set to confirm his squad for the tournament by the 31st May. Those selected so far will have the chance to further strengthen their chances in the friendly matches against Turkey and Australia.
18-year-old Marcus Rashford's inclusion is the one that has raised the most eyebrows with the young striker having never previously played for the senior international line-up. He only made his debut for Louis van Gaal's side at the back end of February but has been very impressive for the Red Devils and has since gone on to score eight goals in 17 appearances. However with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge all ahead of him in the pecking order, the bookies believe him to be an outsider to make the final squad. Bet365 have Rashford at 4/1 to make the 23-man squad but if he manages to get on the scoresheet in the friendlies, then who knows?
Jack Wilshere's selection is another that has seen Hodgson receive criticism given the fact the Arsenal midfielder has started just once this season and that came on the final day against Aston Villa. However the 24-year-old has impressed in his most recent showings for England and his technical ability has made him very popular with the England manager. His place in the final squad seems to be a certainty with Paddy Power offering odds as short as 1/5 on him to be on the plane to France.
It is the inclusion of Fabian Delph however that the bookies believe to be the least likely to make the final squad come the 31st May. The former Aston Villa man has struggled to secure a regular spot in the Manchester City team this season and with a number of other central midfielders included, it is his spot that looks most at jeopardy. Delph can be backed at 6/1 with Skybet to seal his place in the squad. Andros Townsend and Danny Drinkwater are the other two men the bookies believe to be the most likely to miss out however the pair are still both odds on the make the squad in the eyes of the majority of the bookies.
