Ronaldo usurps Ribery as Ballon d'Or favourite

Cristiano Ronaldo is now the heavy odds-on favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or trophy after the voting period was extended to November 29 allowing voters to take into account the Portuguese’s phenomenal performance in the World Cup play-offs.

The 28-year-old scored as his country beat Sweden 1-0 at home but then really came to the fore in Stockholm where he hammered home a hat-trick to win the second leg for his side and send them to Brazil next summer.

This sensational virtuoso performance from the Real Madrid man looks set to swing the remaining votes in his favour and he now looks likely to win his first Ballon d’Or for five years as he is now a best price of 2/5 with Bet Victor for the gong.

The previous favourite had been Bayern Munich’s Frank Ribery after the Frenchman inspired his German team to a famous treble including the Bundesliga and the Champions League. He finally looked set to break the Ronaldo-Lionel Messi duopoly over recent years but now looks likely to miss out again as he drifts to a best price of 11/4 with Sky Bet for the award.
