Rooney linked with Inter switch
The odds on Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney making the switch to Inter Milan have more than halved, prompting suggestions that he could be on his way to Italy. According to the Italian website Calcio Mercato Web, Inter are believed to monitoring the 31-year-olds situation at Old Trafford.
After losing his place in both the United and England starting line-ups, speculation has arisen that Rooney could be set to end his 12-year association with the Red Devils. A big-money move to China has been touted as a possible destination in a move that could see Rooney link-up with his former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson at Shanghai SIPG. There has also been suggestions that he may make a return to this boyhood club Everton or make the move to America with the LA Galaxy in particular.
However it is the potential move to Inter that has caught the bookmakers' eye this week and the tumbling of odds suggest there has been interest in the move somewhere along the line. Rooney, who needs just four more goals to become Manchester United's all-time leading scorer, no longer seems to feature in Jose Mourinho's first choice XI and the possibility of a move away seems a distinct possibility. Inter were taken over by Chinese investors in the summer and have already embarked on a spending spree in the hope to restore the club back to the top of Italian football.
The signing of Rooney, despite his declining ability, would still represent a major coup for Inter. In the slower paced environment of Serie A, he may still be able to flourish whilst the club's owners would be well aware of the off-field, commercial benefits of signing a player of Rooney's reputation. The rumours may turn out to be little more than but given the swift decision by Ladbrokes to cut the odds, there may well be something to report. Inter Milan to be Wayne Rooney's next club can now be found at odds of 5/1 though they are still only the third most likely destination, with both the aforementioned LA Galaxy and Shanghai SIPG priced shorter.
The move to Los Angeles, a path that has already been trod by David Beckham, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard, would seem the most likely and that is also what the bookies' think. For a family man like Rooney, moving Stateside would be the most suited for his wife and children given the lifestyle and lack of language barrier. Paddy Power have the Galaxy at just 11/4 to be Rooney's next club.
Rooney has spoken of his desire to continue playing for England until the 2018 World Cup but his lack of playing time for Manchester United could count against him if he continues to be benched by Mourinho. Though seemingly not yet pushing for a move away from United, things could all change next summer with the World Cup only a year away.
A January transfer seems very unlikely but this one could well be on for the summer so it could be worth capitalising on the longer odds here.
