Sunderland made narrow favourites to sign Adam Johnson

"I agree, if he wants to, he has to leave."

Sunderland are the betting favourites to sign Adam Johnson from Manchester City after Roberto Mancini admitted the player should leave the club if he wants to play regular football.

Sunderland had been the clear odds-on favourites to sign the England winger, but they have now drifted out to 5/4 (from 1/2) after Mancini’s comments alerted Liverpool and Tottenham to the situation.

“Adam can have a future here but you should also understand when you are 23 or 24 years old, you want to play," said Mancini.

"If you are at a top team, you can't always do that, so I agree, if he wants to, he has to leave.

"But if that happens I will be so sorry because Adam is a good guy. He is a different player to the other strikers and wingers and maybe he could be important for us.”

BetVictor now make Liverpool a 2/1 chance to sign Johnsnon this summer, with Spurs also in the reckoning at odds of 4/1.

Newspaper reports suggest that the Black Cats are ready to smash their wage structure in a bid to land the 23-year-old as Martin O’Neill lines-up three signings in a week.

Steven Fletcher has been the subject of multiple bids from the Stadium of Light and Wolves could finally be ready to play ball, while Blackburn’s Martin Olsson is also being lined-up as a replacement for Kieran Richardson who could be on his way to West Ham or Fulham.
