Sunderland take lead in race to sign Clint Dempsey

In the last few hours Sky Bet have slashed their odds on Dempsey moving to Sunderland

Sunderland are now the odds-on favourites to sign want-away Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey following accusations from The Cottagers that the player was tapped up by Liverpool.

In the last few hours Sky Bet have slashed their odds on Dempsey moving to Sunderland in to 1/3 (from 2/1), with odds on a move to Anfield drifting in the opposite direction out to 9/4.

And it’s not just Sky Bet who are reporting an influx of money for the player to move to Wearside. BetVictor are now offering just 1/2 that Dempsey is a Sunderland player by the closure of the summer transfer window, with a move to Liverpool drifting out to 3/1.

The Black Cats splashed out in excess of £20million last week to bring Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher to the club, but manager Martin O’Neill hinted that he would still like to add to his squad.

On the subject of possibly letting some players leave the club O’Neill said: “At the moment, I understand players wanting to play, genuinely wanting to play football. I think that’s admirable. It’s refreshing.

“But while I know that I can only play so many per game, at the end of the day, we haven’t got the biggest squad at the moment. And that – added to the fact that we are looking at loaning some of our younger players out to get some games because they want to play competitively – makes it difficult.

“It’s a balancing act for me at the moment. I’m aware that there is interest in some of my players but I will have to see.”
