United go 1/500 for title after moving 15 points clear

The bookmakers have all but crowned Manchester Untied as 2012/13 Premier League champions after they moved 15 points clear at the top following their 1-0 victory over Reading at the weekend.

Although some bookmakers are offering odds of 1/100 and 1/200, most now go 1/500 that United are top of the table at the conclusion of the season. With Manchester City available at odds of 50/1 to achieve what would be one of the greatest comebacks in English football history and retain their title.

City assistant manager David Platt was reluctant to concede the title, but did admit the task was now extremely improbable.

“Manchester United have a significant advantage,” said Platt speaking instead of an “angry” Roberto Mancini after their 2-0 defeat at Everton. “Our obligation is to be professional and win football matches.”

“It's not mathematically impossible but even if it is it will not change our focus or intensity.

“We want to ensure we finish as high up the table as we possibly can and ensure we win the FA Cup.”

Sir Alex Ferguson was equally reluctant to admit that this side had already claimed the title; “You don't get points or medals for being complacent and we won't be.”

“Most of the time we have been playing well this season, but the 15 points we are ahead isn't a reflection of the performance today (versus Reading), it's from the previous six months really.”
