Van Dijk saga rumbles on

The future of Virgil van Dijk remains up in the air after the Southampton centre back handed in a transfer request. The Saints have been determined to hold on to the services of the Dutchman insisting he is not for sale despite strong interest from Liverpool. The 26-year-old has been training alone over the summer after expressing a desire to leave but his relationship with the club now appears to be at all-time low after handing in a formal request for a transfer.

New Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has previously suggested that the former Celtic man has refused to train although in a statement issued by the player, he has vehemently denied such allegations and gone public with his desire to seek a move away from St. Mary's.

"I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist," Van Dijk stated.

"I have been left frustrated by the club's position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.

"I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer.

"I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances.

"As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events."

The latest events have only made it seem more likely that Van Dijk will leave Southampton this summer and that certainly appears to be the opinion of the bookmakers. Skybet are offering a price of 5/1 that he is still at the club after the summer transfer window so it's looking a real possibility he will leave. Conversely of course the odds are much shorter with regards to potential destinations, with Liverpool the favourites

Earlier this summer when the speculation first arose, it was heavily touted that Van Dijk was keen to follow the well trodden path from St. Mary's to Anfield. However the Reds seemingly dropped their interest after Southampton threatened to report them to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach. The reports suggesting the move have never seemed to disappear however and Jurgen Klopp's side still look to be in the driving seat. With each of the bookies' that are currently offering the market, Van Dijk is odds-on to move to Liverpool by the end of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea have also been credited with holding an interest this summer as the Champions bid to strengthen their squad ahead of their title defence and return to Champions League football. Antonio Conte has been frustrated by the Blues' transfer activity this summer but has reportedly been assured that the club will be able to bring in further reinforcements before the end of August. Skybet are currently offering the best price on the move with current odds of 11/4
