Arsenal suffer Vermaelen injury blow

"He expects a five to six weeks of unavailability."

Thomas Vermaelen could be out for up to six weeks after his father confirmed reports that the player had undergone surgery on an Achilles injury earlier this week.

Although Arsenal have not confirmed the reports as yet Vermaelen’s father told Belgian website Sporza that the player had seen a specialist in Sweden.

“The doctor in Stockholm, where Thomas was operated on last time too, recognised the problem now,” he said.

“He would not take any chances and immediately operated on Thomas. He expects a five to six weeks of unavailability.”

It is thought that the 25-year-old picked up the injury in the Champions League play-off second-leg match against Udinese. He spent eight months on the sidelines last season with an Achillies injury, but this problem is not thought to be as serious.

Arsenal brought in defensive cover in Per Mertesacker on transfer deadline day but failed in their attempts to sign Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill.
