Arsenal v Fulham: Van the Man to Gun-ner down Fulham

Van Persie is continuing to show people what he is capable of, when fully fit

Saturday’s teatime kick-off sees Arsenal – a side in red-hot form – host Fulham at The Emirates Stadium. After a horrific start to the season, Arsene Wenger will be glad to see that his side is back in contention and competing for a coveted top-four finish.

Despite their recent unbeaten run – which has now reached nine games after their midweek victory over Borussia Dortmund – Arsenal’s poor defensive displays are still being scrutinised and after seeing young Carl Jenkinson (back) join Bacary Sagna (ankle) on the treatment table, Gunners fans must have been wondering who was going to step up and fill the gap at right back. Well, if Wednesdays match is anything to go by, Laurent Koscielny is more than capable of doing just that. Along with fellow defenders, Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos, all three, arguably played their finest game in an Arsenal shirt to-date on Wednesday evening. If these three can stay fit, along with defensive organiser Thomas Vermaelen, Arsenal’s defensive frailties could soon be a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Robin Van Persie is continuing to show people what he is capable of, when fully fit. He is in blistering form at the moment and looks capable of scoring any time he receives the ball within 25yards of the opposition’s goal. Bet365 are offering 11/4 on him to score the first goal on Saturday and I wouldn’t bet against it.

On the other hand, Martin Jol will be confident that his Fulham side can keep the Dutchman and his teammates at bay. Fulham enter this match having kept three clean sheets in their last four Premier League away games. Jol has his team well organised defensively and they are a tough side to break down, however, he will be looking for more of a cutting edge up front as they have only managed to score three goals in their six away league games this season.

Taking on board, Fulham’s inability to score away from home and Arsenal’s steadily improving defence, I can see Arsenal not only extending their winning run but keeping a rare clean sheet in the process. Sky Bet are offering 6/4 on Arsenal in the win-to-nil market and the same bookmaker are paying 13/2 on a 2-0 home win.
