Aston Villa v Blackburn Betting Preview

Three of the last four meetings between these sides at Villa Park have seen over 3.5 goals, considering that and the fact Rovers have conceded the most goals on their travels all season, this one should have goals.

With neither of these teams in great form or safe from the dreaded drop this match could still, potentially, have a huge impact on their respective relegation prospects.

Gerard Houllier will be unable to call on Carlos Cuellar as the Spanish defender is suffering a hamstring injury. Jean Makoun is suspended but Nathan Baker could return for The Villans.

Blackburn could receive a much needed attacking boost with both David Hoilett and Roque Santa Cruz being declared fit after the pair suffered knocks in the Newcastle fixture. January signing Mauro Formica may also may his debut after scoring for the reserves midweek.

Houllier Seeking Villa Home Comfort

Despite only winning two of their last six league games at home Villa's form at Villa Park is respectable having lost only three games there all season.

Their precarious league position is a result of not only poor away form but drawing far too many games at home and Houllier will need to start turning one point into three if they are to begin ascending the table.

Villa have won three of the four previous meetings between these sides at Villa Park including a 3-1 victory just three weeks ago in the FA Cup. However, Rovers defeated The Villans 2-0 in the reverse of this fixture earlier in the season.

With only one win in their previous seven away from Ewood Park and after some disappointing performances of late, backing The Villans at betting odds of 4/5 seems the sensible option.

Bet on Bent

Darren Bent has made a reasonable start to life at Villa Park after his £24 million move from Sunderland. The England international has two goals in his five starts for his new club and scored whilst on international duty against Denmark. Despite not scoring in his last two outings he has certainly looked sharp and what he lacks in link up play he certainly makes up for in goals, with a proven scoring record wherever he has been. The former Sunderland man is 7/2 to net the first goal in this one.

While Villa splashed out a club record fee to solve their goal scoring issues, Blackburn have had no such luxuries. With their joint leading scorers both only on four goals, Steve Kean must be hopeful that Santa Cruz rediscovers the form that earned him his £17.5 million move to Man City. The Paraguayan is yet to score since his return but may be worth a punt at 8/1 to net the first goal here.

Three of the last four meetings between these sides at Villa Park have seen over 3.5 goals, considering that and the fact Rovers have conceded the most goals on their travels all season, this one should have goals. Backing over 2.5 at betting odds 8/11 would be a sensible bet but if you're willing to push the boat out, over 3.5 at 15/8 could be more rewarding.

Every year one side is deemed 'too good to go down' and with only 11 games left Villa are going to have to start winning exactly these types of games if they are going to justify that theory.
