Aston Villa v Man City Betting Preview

City cannot afford to go to the defensive extremes that they showed against Arsenal on a regular basis if they are to maintain a serious title challenge.

Aston Villa host Manchester City this Saturday evening hoping that the big money signing of Darren Bent can inspire them to a much needed victory.

Although the deal was littered with controversy there is no doubt that the addition of a prolific goalscorer like Bent is a major positive for Villa. They will, however, be mindful of the player's delicate confidence levels and will therefore be keen for him to get off the mark early in his Villa career.

Bent will go straight into the starting XI but the game comes too early for fellow new signing Jean Makoun who has yet to receive international clearance. Ashley Young returns from suspension but Emile Heskey serves the final game of his three-match ban.

City have an expensive new striker of their own in Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian should make his second start in a sky blue shirt whilst Gareth Barry, Nigel de Jong and Kolo Toure all return after sitting out the FA Cup win over Leicester.

City to go back into their shell?

Whilst City have been scoring for fun of late - 10 in their last three games - they've also been conceding plenty. In the aftermath of the 4-2 win over Leicester - which saw City concede their seventh goal in three matches - Roberto Mancini made a point of singling out his side's defensive frailties and the need to address them.

A fair point well made by the Italian. But City cannot afford to go to the defensive extremes that they showed against Arsenal on a regular basis if they are to maintain a serious title challenge.

So, will City revert to their defensive pragmatism? Or has the signing of Dzeko given them greater license to exploit their attacking options?

Villa are 11/4 to get the win they need to pull clear of the relegation zone whilst it is 11/10 for an away win and 12/5 that the game ends in a draw.

Dzeko v Bent

One is a proven Premier League goalscorer the other comes with a reputation as one of the most exciting talents in European football. Together Bent and Dzeko have commanded recent transfer fees in the region of £50million.

Both clubs will be looking for a return on their investment sooner rather than later, although with Carlos Tevez remaining in such sparkling form the onus isn't on Dzeko as much as it is Bent.

A lot will depend on City's approach for those looking to get involved in the goals betting for this one. Odds of 10/11 on both Under 2.5 and Over 2.5 suggests that the bookmakers are equally unsure about how this one will pan out.

Dzeko is 6/4 to open his Manchester City account whilst Bent is 2/1 to get off the mark on his debut.

When these two sides met at the end of last month the game was all but over inside the first half an hour. Villa will be keen to keep things tight at the back whilst creating as many chances as possible for their new talisman. I'm sure if you asked Gerard Houllier now he'd take a point from this one.
