Back Blues to cruise past Latics

Wigan have conceded the first goal in each of their last 10 games

Third from bottom Wigan Athletic take on third from top Chelsea at the DW Stadium in the tea-time kick-off on Saturday. Having each secured three points against the odds in their previous fixtures, both sides will want to kick-start their respective seasons with Chelsea looking to close the gap on the league-leaders and Wigan hoping to climb out of the relegation zone.

Antolin Alcaraz is a doubt for the Latics but Roberto Martinez may have Emmerson Boyce back from an injury that has sidelined him for the past six weeks. David Luiz returns from suspension and therefore, with the exception of long-term absentee Michael Essien, André Villas-Boas has a fully-fit Chelsea squad from which to name his team. Fernando Torres’ form remains a concern for Chelsea but Juan Mata, Daniel Sturridge and Didier Drogba have all impressed in recent weeks.

Wigan have conceded the first goal in each of their last 10 games and therefore one might expect Chelsea to score first. Despite some bookmakers offering 5/1 or less, Coral offer 8/1 for the in-form Juan Mata to score the first goal of the game. On that same basis, Chelsea look good value at Evens with several bookmakers to be leading at both half-time and full-time.

After their 2-1 win over league-leaders Manchester City, Villas-Boas claimed that Chelsea are still in the title race but, if that statement is to be taken seriously, the away side must take all three points from the DW Stadium - the Blues are available at 2/5 with most bookmakers to do exactly that.

Chelsea have scored 15 goals without conceding in their last three games against Wigan and the Blues will fancy their chances of adding to that total against a side searching for their first clean sheet in 13 games. No team has scored fewer goals than Wigan in the Premier League this season, while only Manchester United have conceded fewer away goals than Chelsea. Sky Bet’s 6/4 therefore looks very good value for Chelsea to win to nil.
