Back Gunners to return to winning ways

Arsenal are the second form side in the league

Wigan host Arsenal at the DW Stadium on Saturday with a lot of incentives for both sides. A win for Wigan could move them out of the relegation zone and a win for visitors could see them leapfrog into a Champions League position.

Neither side has any new injury concerns ahead of this match. Arsenal are without long term absentees Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, Bacary Sagna and Jack Wilshire. Manager Arsene Wenger will bring back his big guns that were rested against Man City in the Carling Cup this midweek. Wigan’s only noted absentee is Antolin Alcaraz who is still serving part of his three match ban.

Whilst Wigan will be hoping that their fortunes have now turned after their win last weekend against Sunderland, it now appears that they only beat a side that is in real turmoil following Steve Bruce’s sacking. That win was their first in 11 games and during those matches they lost a total of nine times. Their desperate form has been largely due to the number of goals that they have shipped per game, meaning that they have the third worst defensive record in the league.

After a very dodgy start things appear to be picking up for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side. Since losing to Blackburn at the back end of September they have won 11 of their last 15 matches in all competitions. They have been formidable at home, winning all of their matches bar there last one against Fulham which was a 1-1 draw. They are the second form side in the league and are only behind Man City on that front by goal difference. They also have the fifth best goal scoring record in the league averaging exactly two goals per game. And historically Arsenal have had the better of things between the two sides having won 12 of the last 16 games in recent years.

This could be tight early on but I fully expect Arsenal to get the better of things as the match develops as statically they have scored the majority of their goals between the 79th and 90th minutes. During this period Wigan have conceded the majority of their goals.
