Ben Arfa close to return

Ben Arfa is 9/1 to be Newcastle's top goalscorer

Hatem Ben Arfa could return to first team action next weekend after nearly 12 months on the sidelines.

The Frenchman began his Newcastle career in positive fashion scoring on his full debut in a 1-0 win over Everton. But a fortnight later suffered a bad leg break following a challenge from Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong.

The Magpies had hoped to have Ben Arfa available for the beginning of this season but an ankle injury picked up in pre-season has delayed his comeback.

However, according to the 24-year-old’s agent Simon Stainrod, he could return to the first team squad for next weekend’s game against Aston Villa.

“He is training again now and it is looking good for him to be fit to play within the next 10 to 14 days so I would imagine that he would be back in Premier League action this month,” Stainrod told Goal.com.

“Newcastle fans have only had a glimpse of what he can do but he will be desperate to make up for lost time and I am sure he will put smiles on lots of faces. If people stop kicking him he will be fine but he is not the sort of person who would be mentally scarred by what has happened in the past.”

Hatem Ben Arfa can be backed at betting odds of 9/1, with Victor Chandler, to finish the season as Newcastle’s top Premier League goalscorer.
