Betting value in backing narrow United win

Both teams will be desperate to avoid conceding the first goal

Manchester United travel to FC Basel of Switzerland on Wednesday night hoping to avoid defeat in order to guarantee progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Excluding qualifiers, Basel have kept just one clean sheet in their last 16 Champions League games and United will fancy their chances of breaching the home defence here. However, they will have to do so without the injured Javier Hernández, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen. Between them, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf have played just four minutes in the Premier League and therefore, with so much at stake, the away side’s forward positions are likely to comprise the more experienced Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. Sir Alex Ferguson will also be without the injured Tom Cleverley, Anderson, Fabio and Rafael while Michael Carrick is suspended.

Basel have won seven consecutive games in the Swiss Super League and they were unlucky not to beat United in September when a last minute Ashley Young equaliser earned the Red Devils a 3-3 draw. The bookmakers are clearly expecting more goals this time around and the game is odds-on (4/6) to see three or more goals. In the 13 games that United have been involved in since the 3-3 draw with Basel, only four have produced more than two goals – one was the 6-1 drubbing by Manchester City while two of them were against lower league opposition. Both teams will be desperate to avoid conceding the first goal and therefore the Under 2.5 Goals market appears to represent excellent value.

Basel playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri was suspended for the meeting at Old Trafford but should be available on Wednesday night and will pose a significant threat. However, United have lost just one of their last 25 away fixtures in the Champions league and, of the last eight in that run, they have conceded only once. Paddy Power are offering a very tempting 8/1 for a 2-0 away win but any United win at a best-priced 8/13 may be the safer bet.
