Birmingham v Aston Villa Betting Odds

Villa couldn't build on that last-gasp draw at Stamford Bridge and the subsequent defeat to Sunderland was their sixth loss in eight games.

Aston Villa travel across the city to take on rivals Birmingham in a relegation six-pointer with more than just local pride at stake.

Villa slipped into the relegation zone after defeat 10 days ago at home to Sunderland whilst Birmingham are only a point better off but did win last time out away to Blackpool.

When the two sides met at Villa Park back in late October of last year a drab 0-0 draw was all that they could muster up. But when they met a month later in the Carling Cup quarter-final the game had much more of a local derby feel to it; The Blues progressing to the semis with a 2-1 win.

Gerard Houllier will be without the services of Emile Heskey and Ashley Young who are both suspended for this one whilst Luke Young is out with a knee problem. Birmingham's Scott Dann and James McFadden also miss out through injury.

Despite Birmingham's lowly league position they will be buoyed by results over the Christmas period which saw them take points from Tottenham and Manchester United and an important win away to Blackpool. In fact Alex McLeish's side have lost just two of their last eight Premier League games.

Conversely Villa couldn't build on that last-gasp draw at Stamford Bridge and the subsequent defeat to Sunderland was their sixth loss in the same eight-game period.

So it will come as no surprise to punters that the home side are made the clear 7/5 favourites by the bookmakers. Those who fancy Villa to build on the momentum gained from their FA Cup win over Sheffield United can get 2/1 on an away win and 9/4 that the game ends all square.

That victory over The Blades was a costly one for Villa as Ashley Young's red card in that game means that they will be without the winger here and that could be a pivotal factor in deciding the outcome of this game. Young has five Premier League assists this season and without him The Villains could be left seriously lacking in the creativity ranks.

That may mean that Houllier is forced to set his team up with a defence-first attitude and, unfortunately for the neutrals, we could be in for a tight and typically scrappy local derby.

Under 2.5 goals can be backed at odds of 4/6 with the opposite selection available to back at 11/10 with the majority of online bookmakers.

If you are looking for a bet on the goalscorer markets then taking the defensive players can be profitable in games involving Birmingham. Centre-back Liam Ridgewell has three league goals already this season and can be backed at 25/1 to get the opener here whilst Roger Johnson is also available to back at around the same price.

With these two local rivals separated by just one point at the wrong end of the Premier League table the significance of the result of this match, and the ensuing confidence boost it would give to the winner, could map the route that each club's season will take. Defeat for Villa would certainly edge Houllier closer to the Villa Park exit door.
