Blackpool v Chelsea Betting Preview

Against a Blackpool side that have yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet on home soil, the Spaniard will surely fancy his chances of opening his Chelsea account here.

Having been ruled out of the title race a matter of weeks ago Chelsea can now close the gap between themselves and the leaders to just nine points, after being 15 points off the pace just seven days ago.

Alex and Yossi Benayoun remain Chelsea's only serious injury concerns, although there are some apprehensions surrounding David Luiz who picked up a hamstring injury against Manchester United last Tuesday.

Blackpool are without their most potent attacking threats as both DJ Campbell and Charlie Adam are suspended. However, both Elliot Grandin and Stephen Crainey are in contention after recovering from injury.

Starry Starry Light

The Seasiders came within 20 minutes of beating Manchester United earlier this season and have also defeated Liverpool and Tottenham at Bloomfield Road this year. So, if nothing else, Chelsea will know that they are in for a game this evening.

However, the absence of both Adam and Campbell is a hugely significant factor here. Ian Holloway's side managed just two shots on goal against Wolves in their last match without the Scottish midfielder and it's difficult to see them fairing much better against a resurgent Chelsea side.

The Blues got the bit between their teeth in the second half of that win against United, and, with the league leaders losing again on Sunday, will recognise the opportunity to muscle their way back into title contention.

They'll need to work for anything that they get here but at betting odds of 1/3 they shouldn't have too many problems in obliging the short price punters. Blackpool are 8/1 to add another notable scalp and 9/2 to get what would be a valuable point in their battle to avoid relegation.

Theatre of Goals

It seemed, prior to the Manchester United win, that Ancelotti had settled on his preferred attacking pairing of Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka. However, Didier Drogba's positive impact from the bench in that game may have forced the Italian into a rethink. At least, the opportunity to rotate the squad may see Drogba start this one.

Torres, yet to get off the mark in a Blue shirt, has scored at Bloomfield Road already this season. Against a Blackpool side that have yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet on home soil, the Spaniard will surely fancy his chances of opening his Chelsea account here.

Torres and Drogba can both be backed at odds of 21/20 to get on the scoresheet tonight with Anelka at a slightly bigger 13/10.

The statistics about goals being scored at Blackpool this season are widely known by now, but worth repeating nevertheless. As well as failing to keep a clean sheet at Bloomfield Road they have also scored in all of their home games this season. The Seasiders' home games average over 3.5 goals per game while they average just under 3.5 goals per game in all Premier League games. We've come to expect goals in games involving Blackpool.

Which is why the bookmakers quote Over 2.5 goals at an astonishingly short 4/9 and Under 2.5 goals at 13/8. Chelsea are 11/10 to become the first team to keep a Premier League clean sheet at Bloomfield Road this season.

Defeating Manchester United on Tuesday proved to be the catalyst for further woes for the league leaders, Ancelotti will be hoping that it also proves to be the beginning of an upturn in fortunes for his side.
