Blues to stifle United

William Hill offer a tempting 11/4 for a red card

Fourth-placed Chelsea take on second-placed Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon in the biggest game of the weekend’s Premier League program.

Ashley Cole is suspended for the hosts following his sending off in the 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Tuesday night. Captain John Terry is unavailable through injury and therefore Gary Cahill looks set to make his debut. Ramires is also a doubt but Frank Lampard may return. Didier Drogba and Salamon Kalou are both away on international duty.

Following Manchester City’s midweek defeat at Everton, United are now level on points with their city rivals and they will be hoping to take all three points from The Bridge in order to maintain pressure on the league leaders.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be without the injured Anders Lindegaard meaning heavily-criticised £17.8m signing David De Gea will battle it out with Ben Amos for a starting place in goal. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young, Nani and Tom Cleverley are all available for selection, though the latter is unlikely to start following a lengthy lay-off.

£50m striker Fernando Torres has not scored since the end of September last year while top-scorer Daniel Sturridge has not found the net since Christmas. It is perhaps of little surprise that the Blues have only once managed to scored more than one goal in their last eight Premier League outings.

The Red Devils have the best away record in the league but last won a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge in 2002. Several bookmakers offer a best-priced 23/10 for the two sides to share the spoils on Sunday and a 1-1 draw is available at 6/1 with Coral. Howard Webb has been appointed as referee for the game and only Mike Dean has produced more red cards this season. It promises to be an intense affair and William Hill offer a tempting 11/4 for a red card to be shown at any point during the match.
