Blues win blows title betting wide open

City's main title rivals were all shortened in the betting

Chelsea came from behind to beat Manchester City on Monday evening, and in doing so blew the title race wide open.

Upon witnessing City’s first domestic defeat of the season bookmakers reacted hastily, Victor Chandler, in particular, lengthened Roberto Mancini’s side’s title odds from 4/7 to 4/5.

Consequently, City’s main title rivals were all shortened in the betting; Manchester United moved from 9/4 into 2/1, Chelsea were chopped from 12/1 to 7/1 and Tottenham came in from 28/1 to 16/1.

“It was a good win and it changes our challenge for the Premier League,” said Andre Villas-Boas after the game. “Seven points, in this Premier League with so many teams competing for the title, is nothing. A lot of games have to be played yet.

“For our title challenge to still be alive we have to be competent through the December fixtures.”

The Blues go to Wigan next, before a visit to White Hart Lane three days before Christmas.

City’s credentials will be put to the test again this coming weekend when they host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. The Gunners are priced at odds of 4/1 to inflict back-to-back defeats upon the league leaders, while City are 4/6 to get back to winning ways.
