Bruce backed in sack race betting

Short isn't expected to be as forgiving of Bruce

Bookmakers have been forced to slash their odds on Steve Bruce being the first Premier League manager to lose his job after a reshuffle in the Sunderland boardroom led to a stream of money being place on the Black Cats gaffer.

Niall Quinn stepped down as Sunderland chairman last Monday in order to focus on the club’s overseas business interests. Owner Ellis Short has now taken over from the Irishman as club chairman and isn’t expected to be as forgiving of Bruce should results not pick up soon.

Reports in the Sunday Express at the weekend suggested that Sunderland had approached Martin O’Neill regarding the possibility of him replacing Bruce at the Stadium of Light. The former Aston Villa and Celtic boss is reported to have refused to talk to the club whilst Bruce is still in charge, but that has been enough to encourage punters to part with their money in the Premier League sack race betting.

Sky Bet and Paddy Power now make Bruce their favourite to be the first Premier League manager to lose his job this season, offering odds of 4/5 and Evens respectively.

Stan James, Ladbrokes and William Hill still have Blackburn manager Steve Kean as the favourite but only marginally ahead of Bruce. The bookmakers appear to believe that the former Manchester United defender’s time on Wearside is coming to an end.
