Bruges v Birmingham: Belgians to prosper

Bruges have won eight of their last 10 matches

Bruges host Championship side Birmingham this Thursday at the Jan Breyelstadion knowing a win for them will almost guarantee a place in the next phase after just three games played.

Bruges has also begun their league campaign very well as they find themselves in second place, a point behind top side Anderlecht. In fact their form has been so impressive that they are unbeaten in the league so far this season. They have won eight of their last 10 matches and have not lost a match at home in 19 games, a run that stretches back to the New Year.

Birmingham, on the other hand, have not started so well domestically and they find themselves languishing in 16th position in the Championship.

Bruges’s form against English opposition has been a little hit and miss as they have won on six occasions, drawn twice and lost eight times. However at home they have won six and drawn once, underlining their formidable home record. When you consider most of those games would have been against top English opponents and not a Championship side another home win looks likely to be on the cards.

The Belgian side have no fresh injury worries from the team that beat AA Gent 2-0 at the weekend.

Similarly, Chris Hughton’s side came through the weekend’s win against Leicester unscathed, and look set to stick with an unchanged team in Belgium. Curtis Davies has travelled and could make his first appearance after being stretchered off against Barnsley. The centre-back pairing of Steven Caldwell and Pablo Ibanez is likely to remain.
