Chelsea 9/2 to pass stern Barca test

Di Matteo believes that they can beat the defending champions

Roberto di Matteo’s Chelsea side are priced at odds of 9/2 to beat Barcelona and qualify for the Champions League final after the Blues booked their place in the semi-final of the competition with a 3-1 aggregate win over Benfica.

Frank Lampard’s penalty early in the first half put Chelsea in the driving seat of the tie but a Javi Garcia header five minutes from time set up a nervy end to the game before Raul Meireles struck to seal the result.

Few, including previous manager Jose Mourinho, are giving Chelsea much chance of qualifying for their second Champions League final in four years, but current boss Di Matteo believes that they can beat the defending champions.

“It will be exciting to play two games against one of the best teams in the world,” said the Italian. “We will find a strategy that will suit our players and our team to face Barcelona.”

“We have faced them a lot of times over the years and a lot of our players have some history against Barcelona and they certainly felt they were a bit hard done by when they played against them three years ago.

It is not, however, a sentiment shared by the bookmakers who offer odds of 4/5 for Barcelona to take a first-leg lead away from Stamford Bridge, and go just 1/6 on the Catalan giants progressing to the final in Munich.

Who they might face in Germany is not quite so clear-cut. Although Real Madrid are made the 4/7 favourites to see off Bayern Munich in the other semi-final, it is the Germans, at odds of 6/4, who are favoured to take a first-leg lead.
