Chelsea v Man Utd Betting Preview

While United have the best attack in the league having scored 61 goals Chelsea have the best defence having conceded just 22.

Chelsea's chances of retaining their Premier League title hang by a thread, anything other than a win against the league leaders would see that thread snap. This is a must-win game for the Blues.

A massive 15 points separate the two sides as they head into Tuesday night's game and although many have already disregarded Chelsea's chances of winning the league if they take three points here they may not be out of it just yet.

A win for Carlo Ancelotti's side would close the gap to 12 points, the Blues also have a game in hand and a trip to Old Trafford to come. The hope will be that a victory would kick start their season and have the opposite effect on United. There are a lot of ifs and buts, but if Chelsea can when tonight they can at least retain a modicum of belief.

Manchester United are without defensive duo Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans meaning the impressive Chris Smalling will continue at the back. Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs, however, are expected to be available.

Alex and Yossi Benayoun remain the home side's only injury concerns but the main point of discussion and debate prior to the game will be how Ancelotti will utilise his trio of star strikers.

Home comforts not so comfortable

Although Chelsea have lost their air of invincibility at Stamford Bridge United's form on the road has also been far from impressive this season. Whilst they won't be as confident as they have been in this fixture in years gone by John Terry and co are still the strong betting favourites at short odds of 6/5.

The Blues have not lost to Sir Alex Ferguson's side at the Bridge since April 2002 and United have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League visits to Chelsea.

Similar formations have seen these two sides cancel each other out in the past and don't be surprised to see another tight encounter with the major battles being contested in the middle of the park. Lampard versus Carrick, Fletcher versus Essien and Ramires versus Scholes/Giggs holding the key to the result at Stamford Bridge.

While United have the best attack in the league having scored 61 goals Chelsea have the best defence having conceded just 22. One of them will prevail.

The draw can be backed at odds of 23/10 and an away win, which would go a long way to securing a record 19th English league title for the Red Devils, is an appealing 5/2.

Decisions, decisions, decisions

Much will depend on whether Ancelotti can find a way to get the best out of his strikers. Nicolas Anelka has undoubtedly been the pick of the trio over the past month and is almost certain to start while Fernando Torres' performances are at least following an upward curve. Leaving Didier Drogba to take up position on the bench.

Torres has scored has scored three goals in his last four league games against Manchester United and is 7/4 to add to that tally this Tuesday evening. Anelka is also 7/4 to add to the two he scored in Copenhagen last week.

Ferguson also has a big decision to make in terms of team selection. Dimitar Berbatov has often been the unlucky one forced to sit out when the United manager has opted for a loan striker, but give then Bulgarian didn't start at the weekend one suspects that was decision was made with this game in mind.

So, will Rooney - who escaped a retrospective ban for elbowing Wigan's James McCarthy at the weekend - be dropped to the bench, or will United play with two strikers? Or was Javier Hernandez's brace against the Latics enough to earn him a start here?

Rooney is 21/10 to get on the score sheet, Berbatov is 5/2 and Chicharito is 11/4.

Chelsea have already lost seven Premier League games this season and simply cannot afford to make that eight. Another loss would be the most in a single campaign since Roman Abramovich's arrival and also the most ever by defending Premier League champions.
