Chelsea prepare Cahill bid

Cahill could be available for around £7million this winter

Chelsea are preparing a January bid for Bolton defender Gary Cahill as Andre Villas-Boas looks to bolster his side’s shaky defence.

The Blues have conceded 15 Premier League goals this season and are looking increasingly fragile at the back. John Terry is appearing progressively more cumbersome while David Luiz’s erratic streak often brings unnecessary risk to his side.

Cahill, whose contract expires next summer, was the subject of interest from Arsenal and Tottenham in the summer, but neither club could reach Bolton’s evaluation of the player. That valuation has depreciated as the England defender approaches the end of his Bolton deal and he could be available for around £7million this winter.

Sky Bet currently make Chelsea the strong 4/5 favourites in their Gary Cahill January transfer betting market. Manchester United join Arsenal and Spurs in the betting with all three clubs priced at 5/1 to sign the 25-year-old.

The Gunners' recent upturn in form means a move from them for Cahill is unlikely. Arsene Wenger appears content with his defensive trio of Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen.

Both Tottenham and Manchester United, however, may be tempted. Harry Redknapp is fully aware that Ledley King is limited in the number of games he can play in a season and, at Old Trafford, Rio Ferdinand is beginning to play a lesser role and could need replacing.
