Chelsea seek first-leg lead in Benfica

No side in the Portuguese league has scored more than Benfica this season

Chelsea travel to Lisbon this week for the first-leg of their Champions League Quarter-Final tie against Benfica with the winners of the tie facing either AC Milan or Barcelona in the Semi-Final over two legs next month.

Top scorer Oscar Cardozo is likely to pose the biggest goal threat for the hosts and Betfred offer a best-priced 13/2 for the Paraguayan to break the deadlock. Jorge Jesus will, however, be without the services of Yannick Djalo and Ezequiel Garay due to injury.

Branislav Ivanovic may be available for Chelsea after he missed Saturday’s draw against Tottenham Hotspur with a thigh injury.  Former Benfica players Ramires and David Luiz are both expected to feature.

Benfica are currently second in the Portuguese league, one point behind leaders FC Porto. They have won 11 of their 12 league games at Estadio da Luz and they have not been beaten in any of their last 10 European matches on home soil. In contrast, Chelsea have led in all four of their away games in Europe this season but are still searching for their first win on the road. Blue Square offer 4/1 for Chelsea to score first and fail to win the game.

Both sides overturned first-leg defeats in the previous round of the tournament and both sides go into this game on the back of goalless draws in their most recent domestic matches. No side in the Portuguese league has scored more than Benfica this season and they average over three goals per game at home. Chelsea have not failed to score in eight Champions League fixtures and, on that basis, there is excellent value in Sky Bet’s offer of 10/11 for both teams to score during the game.

A score draw would suit Chelsea more than their hosts but an away win is perhaps too much to expect from the Blues. Benfica look good value at 7/10 in Boylesports’ Draw No Bet market.
