Citizens to sing to the Toon of champions

City have conceded only six goals in the first-half of games this season

Newcastle United host Manchester City at the Sports Direct Arena on Sunday in a game that may have huge significance for both sides at the top of the Premier League table.

Alan Pardew has doubts over the fitness of midfielder Cheick Tiote and defender Danny Simpson. And both will face late fitness tests. Papiss Cisse, with 13 goals in his first 12 games for the Magpies, will again lead the line for the hosts.

Roberto Mancini may name an unchanged side from the one that beat Manchester United on Monday night meaning Carlos Tevez and Sergio Ageuro are again likely to start in attack. The Argentine duo have scored 12 goals in the five games that they have started together. Both players are available at odds of 11/8 with Sky Bet to score at any time during the game.

Newcastle’s shock victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday left them level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and kept their hopes of Champions League qualification alive. They are unbeaten in their last nine home games in the Premier League and have not conceded a single goal at the Sports Direct Arena since the beginning of March.

City have conceded only six goals in the first-half of games this season and, on that basis, William Hill’s odds of 5/2 look good value for a first-half stalemate. The Citizens boast the tightest defence in the league and so Stan James’ odds of 6/5 also look very generous for fewer than 2.5 goals to be scored during the game.

Manchester City’s win over Manchester United on Monday night put them top of the league by virtue of a better goal difference than their city rivals. A win at the Sports Direct Arena would leave them needing just one home win over Queens Park Rangers next weekend to all-but-guarantee them a first league title since 1968.

Despite having won seven of their last eight games, the Magpies showed last weekend during the 4-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic that they are vulnerable under pressure. BetVictor offer odds of 3/4 for the Citizens to take all three points and it would take a brave person to bet against them on Sunday.

Recommended Bets:
