City and Spurs cut for title

Sir Alex Ferguson's side are now three points behind the league leaders

Bookmakers have been forced to cut their odds on both Manchester City and Tottenham winning their maiden Premier League title following Manchester United’s second successive league defeat.

Ladbrokes now make City the strong 4/9 favourites with United being eased out to 5/2 and Tottenham being snipped into 9/1.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “United were backed to do the business tonight [Wednesday] so that's another welcome result for us this year. Their title backers must also now be sweating as City march on.”

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are now three points behind the league leaders with Spurs a further three points behind, but having played a game fewer. Harry Redknapp’s men entertain Everton next Wednesday in a rearranged fixture, knowing that a win would move them level on points with the champions.

Chelsea maintained an already sizeable nine-point gap at the top with a last-gasp win over Wolves. They remain at long odds of 50/1, despite captain Frank Lampard’s proclamations that his team should still be “challenging for the title”.

Arsenal’s defeat at Fulham saw their odds drift out to 80/1 while Liverpool’s waning challenge suffered another blow at the Etihad Stadium and The Reds are now an unlikely 150/1 for the title.
