City made favourites to sign Rooney

the announcement from the club did little to quell punters' appetites for a bet

Manchester United took the unusual step on Friday night to deny rumours – that had yet to be published – that Wayne Rooney would leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

Saturday’s Independent claimed that Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson ere no longer seeing eye-to-eye and that the England forward would be moved on. When news of the story being published broke the club and player moved quickly to issue a joint statement in an attempt to nip the situation in the bud.

“Any suggestion that Manchester United and Wayne Rooney are to part company is complete nonsense,” said the statement.

“We can assure all United fans that the manager and the club are committed to Wayne Rooney and Wayne is committed to the manager and the club.”

But the announcement from the club did little to quell punters’ appetites for a bet on Rooney’s next club.

“All of a sudden there are people wanting to bet that Wayne Rooney will be leaving Man U as rumours do the rounds,” said Hill’s spokesperson Graham Sharpe.

William Hill now make Manchester City the 11/10 favourites to be Rooney’s next club; with Chelsea at odds of 4/1, Real Madrid 5/1 and Barcelona 9/1.

Hills also offer odds of 10/3 that the 26-year-old leaves the club during the January transfer window and 9/4 that he is no longer a player at the beginning of the 2012/2013 Premier League season.
