Coral make Hughton favourite for Baggies job

Hughton has guided Birmingham into the Championship play-offs this season

Birmingham boss Chris Hughton has been made the betting favourite to become the next manager of West Bromwich Albion if, as expected, Roy Hodgson becomes the next England manager.

Hughton has guided Birmingham into the Championship play-offs this season and was in the running to take over at the Hawthorns before Hodgson was appointed at the end of last season.

“Hughton did a decent job when in charge at Newcastle, and with a play-off berth already secured with Birmingham, one way or another he could be returning to the Premier League next season,” said Coral spokesman Gary Burton.

Coral’s second-favourite in the betting is former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley at odds of 4/1. However, there is some discrepancy between bookmakers here with Sky Bet, Paddy Power and William Hill all making Curbishley their favourite.

Current Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton, who was caretaker manager of West Brom for a short period before Hodgson’s appointment, is made the 6/1 third-favourite with Coral, followed by Wigan boss Roberto Martinez at odds of 8/1.

Former Huddersfield boss Lee Clark is a lively contender at odds of 10/1. The 39-year-old’s stock has risen gradually over recent years as he guided The Terriers to successive League One play-off semi-finals. Steve Bruce is also at odds of 10/1 in the betting as the former Sunderland and Wigan boss looks for a route back into management.
