El Pistolero to shoot down Bluebirds

Liverpool's defensive record has been one of the best in the Premier League

Cardiff City of the Championship face Liverpool of the Premier League in the Carling Cup final at Wembley on Sunday for a chance to win the first major piece of silverware on offer this season.

Cardiff skipper Mark Hudson and goalkeeper Tom Heaton are both expected to be available for selection. Peter Whittingham is likely to be a key figure for the Welsh side having performed to a very high standard throughout the season.

Some might say that the script is written for Liverpool's Cardiff-born forward Craig Bellamy to make a big impact at Wembley but the return of Luis Suarez and the much-improved form of Andy Carroll may mean that Bellamy will have to settle for a place on the bench. Lucas Leiva is the only major absentee for the Reds.

The only Premier League side that Cardiff came up against on the road to Wembley was relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers. Despite a favourable draw, the Bluebirds needed extra-time to see off Oxford United, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City and Crystal Palace with the latter two being decided on a penalty shoot-out. In contrast, Liverpool, undeterred by being drawn away from home in every round, have knocked out Stoke City, Chelsea and Manchester City en route to Wembley. The last time the Reds faced a Championship side, they put six past Brighton in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Promotion-seeking Cardiff are currently fifth in the Championship league table despite having lost three of their last four games and conceding 11 goals in the process.

Liverpool's defensive record has been one of the best in the Premier League all season and, provided Suarez and co have kept their shooting boots from last weekend's 6-1 win over Brighton, they will be confident of ending their six-year wait for silverware. The seven-time winners are a measly 1/6 to lift the trophy but a far more attractive 4/9 with Coral to win in 90 minutes.

BetVictor offer 11/8 for Suarez to score at any time, though that price may not be available for long given that most other bookmakers offer lower than Evens. The same firm offers a very tempting even money bet on fewer than 2.5 goals being scored during the game.

Recommended Bets:

Back Under 2.5 Goals @ Evens with BetVictor
