Europe awakens to City might

City are now fourth-favourites

Manchester City’s convincing 3-0 win at the El Madrigal on Wednesday night offered a warning shot to the rest of Europe. City’s might is not restricted to the confines of the English shores.

Having brushed aside all that stood in their way in the Premier League City had stuttered in the Champions League. A home draw against Napoli was followed by a resounding defeat in Munich then a somewhat fortunate, last-gasp win over Villarreal at the Etihad Stadium.

But they put all that to bed on Wednesday evening as they steamrolled an admittedly struggling Villarreal side.

Regardless of their opponent’s current plight it was enough to impress both bookmakers and punters. Boylesports shortened City’s betting odds on winning the Champions League in their debut season from 14/1 to 8/1 where they are now fourth-favourites.

Barcelona continue to head the Champions League betting market. The Catalan club are a best price of 19/10 to become the first side to successfully defend the title of European champions. Real Madrid are 9/2 second-favourites and, following three wins and a draw plus some scintillating football, Bayern Munich are third-favourites at odds of 15/2.

Manchester United are now 9/1 to go one better than they did last season, Chelsea have drifted slightly to 11/1 following a poor run of form and Arsenal are hovering around the 28/1 mark as they continue to rebuild following their devastating start to the season.
