Everton v Chelsea: Blues to falter further

Saha has scored 8 goals in 6 starts against Chelsea

Everton will be hoping to rub salt into Chelsea’s wounds following their shock weekend defeat at QPR in the west-London derby on Sunday.

Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba were both given their marching orders in the first half of Sunday’s game, leaving the remaining nine men to put up a valiant, yet unrewarding, fight for a share of the spoils. The numerical disadvantage at the weekend will give Andre Villas-Boas little choice but to rotate his weary squad in this Carling Cup fixture. Fernando Torres returns from suspension and there may also be places in the starting line-up for fringe players like Josh McEachran, Salomon Kalou and Romelu Lukaku.

David Moyes does not have the same luxury of choice as his Portuguese counterpart and therefore is likely to field close to his strongest team in this fourth round tie. Fresh from their 3-1 win at Fulham on Sunday, Everton will be confident of reaching the Quarter Finals of the League Cup for only the second time in 23 years.

Louis Saha has scored 8 goals in 6 starts against Chelsea and, after netting in his substitute appearance at Craven Cottage last weekend, he will fancy his chances of earning a recall to Everton’s starting line-up on Wednesday. The Frenchman found himself in cold water last month after using Twitter to voice his disappointment about being left out of the squad to face West Brom. He now faces a battle to earn an extension to his contract, which has six months left to run, and he will relish the opportunity to impress against one of his favourite opponents.

With a big game against Arsenal to come next weekend before a Champions League game against Genk the following Tuesday, Chelsea will not want this game to go beyond 90 minutes. The home side look a value bet at 23/10 to add to Chelsea’s woes.
