Everton v Liverpool Betting Preview

one of the last nine Merseyside derbies have ended with more than 2.5 goals

Liverpool kick-off this Merseyside derby three points ahead of their neighbours in the Premier League table. But an identical goal difference means that a win for Everton would see them leapfrog their opponents and, temporarily, move into the top five.

Considering the lack of investment in the squad and the loss of key playmaker Mikel Arteta that would be an astounding achievement for David Moyes and his players at this early stage of the campaign.

Usually hindered by a slow start to the season The Toffees have begun this one with two wins and a draw from their opening five games. They can also take confidence from having lost just one of their last 14 league games at Goodison Park.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are still scratching around for consistency and have failed to score in their last two Premier League away games. Expect a closely fought affair with battles in key areas all over the pitch contributing to the final outcome of the game.

One key factor in this match will be decided before kick-off and that is the fitness of Everton forward Tim Cahill. The Australian is an important player for Moyes and will undergo a late fitness test following a shin injury picked up against Manchester City.

Steven Gerrard is likely to start the game on the bench has he continues his comeback from a lengthy lay-off. Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger are both set to miss out having only recently returned to training.

Boylesports make Liverpool the 6/4 favourites in the Match Odds betting, with Everton priced at 9/5 and the draw 9/4. At those odds I couldn’t advise a bet on the visitors but the draw certainly does look tempting.

However, it is the goals markets where I would suggest you make your biggest plays of the match. Only one of the last nine Merseyside derbies have ended with more than 2.5 goals while the last four at Goodison Park have had two goals or fewer. Under 2.5 goals at odds of 8/11 looks the best bet of the day.
