FA Cup 1st Round Betting Round-up

Newport have had a poor start to the Blue Square season

This weekend sees the long-awaited return of the FA Cup, with many lower-league sides having the chance to claim their “15 minutes of fame” as Andy Warhol once said. Out of the 15 games that include a non-league versus league match-up, there are some contests that could turn out to be some real crackers.

On Saturday, the first game on the slate is Shrewsbury away at Newport County. Graham Turner’s men are hitting a rich vein of form, having lost only two – against League Two’s top two sides – out of their last seven games. Conversely, the home side have had a poor start to the Blue Square season with only three victories all season and a contributing factor is their lack of prowess in front of goal, scoring only 21 goals in 19 games. They may need to improve that rate to keep up with some of the Shrews’ top-scorers, including Marvin Morgan and Terry Gornell.

Another intriguing match-up takes another League 2 side, Rotherham United, up to Cumbria to take on Barrow in what could be an entertaining game. Both teams show intent to score goals with the home side ranking tied-third in the Blue Square Premier with 20 home strikes and chalking up six victories at Holker Street; only Luton and Cambridge have managed a similar six wins on their home patch. As for the Millers, they have scored 18 goals – the most in their division – and only Manchester City can beat their total in the top four divisions of English football.

The third tie involving a League Two side and an outfit from the top-tier of non-league football takes place at Kenilworth Road, as Luton Town host out-of-form Northampton Town. The Cobblers are in serious woe, coming into this weekend’s game in 20th place and only three points above the relegation zone. Luton, on the other hand, are only a win outside the play-off places and a victory against Gary Johnson’s men would give them a big boost in their fight to return to the Football league after their relegation in 2009.
