Ferguson defends Mourinho

11/4 that the next United manager is Mourinho

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Jose Mourinho after the Real Madrid manager attracted further criticism for his touchline antics.

Mourinho appeared to gouge the eye of Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova following the recent Spanish Supercopa second-leg fixture between the two Spanish giants. Many thought that the incident – and other similar acts of disdain – would cost the Portuguese his chance of succeeding Ferguson at Old Trafford, but the current United manager has now moved to defend the former Chelsea boss.

“I don't find anything wrong with his enthusiasm,” said Fergie to Corriere dello Sport.

“When I was younger I showed more enthusiasm on the bench too. I was always gesticulating and directing. It's Mourinho's nature to be agitated.

“When I saw Mourinho run up and down the touchline at Old Trafford when he coached Porto, I said to myself, 'Did I also use to do that?' People recognise his enthusiasm. The fans understand that he's fighting for them and for the squad.”

It is believed that Ferguson will have a strong hand in who succeeds him at Old Trafford when he decides to call time on his illustrious career. And his recent comments have served to cement Mourinho’s place at the head of the next Manchester United manager betting markets.

Paddy Power currently offer odds of 11/4 that the next United manager is Mourinho. Current Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola is 9/2 while Everton’s David Moyes is 15/2.
