Genk v Chelsea: Emphasis on tightening defence

the emphasis should be on tightening up a leaky defence

Chelsea take on Genk this Tuesday evening knowing that victory could see them qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League after just four group games.

Although stuttering in the Premier League it is a game that The Blues are fully expected to win, having defeated the Belgian champions 5-0 in the reverse of this fixture a fortnight ago. Andre Villas-Boas will be looking for an equally emphatic win as he aims to put his side’s season back on track.

Team News

Genk manager Mario Been will be without the services of defender Jeroen Simaeys. The 26-year-old has been out since the beginning of the month after suffering a broken toe in training.

Didier Drogba is unavailable for Chelsea having undergone surgery on his arm. John Obi Mikel and long-term absentee Michael Essien aare Villas-Boas’s only other major injury concerns as Ramires could return to action following a knee injury.

Football Betting

The game at Stamford Bridge between these two sides was as one-sided a Champions League fixture as you could wish to see. Chelsea had 27 shots (12 on target) to Genk’s five (none on target) with the home team commanding 63% of possession in the game.

Fernando Torres was the star of the show with two goals that could have been a hat-trick were it not for the intervention of the upright. However, there is no guarantee that he will start this game and, even if he does, should be avoided in the anytime goalscorer betting at odds of 8/11.

Despite the rout in west London I’m inclined to think that The Blues won’t be as dominant or ruthless this midweek. Confidence obviously took a severe battering at the weekend and the emphasis should be on tightening up a leaky defence.

That shouldn’t be too difficult against a Genk side that have yet to score in the competition and so backing Under 2.5 goals at odds of 5/4 looks the sensible bet of the evening.
