Goals markets offer betting value in decisive game

Villas-Boas is adamant that this side will stick to their philosophies

It is make-or-break time for Chelsea and Valencia in the Champions League with both sides knowing exactly what they need to do in order to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the competition.

A win or a goalless draw for Andre Villas-Boas’s team should be enough for them; while victory or any score draw would see the Spanish outfit go through. There are certain to be some nervy moments for both sides.

The Blues are without Josh McEachran and Jose Bosingwa, although perhaps neither would have featured anyway. The conundrums facing Villas-Boas will be similar to those that he has contemplated many times already this season; does he start with Fernando Torres and whether to risk playing the erratic David Luiz when a clean sheet could be paramount to their fate.

Valencia manager Unai Emery is sweating on the fitness of Ever Banega and Victor Ruiz. Both are expected to fall short of the required fitness levels. A number of key players were rested for the weekend win over Espanyol and should return to the side here.

Given the enormity of the game, and the importance of keeping a clean sheet, it was thought that Chelsea would adopt a more defensive approach than has been commonly associated with them in recent weeks. However, Villas-Boas has made a conscious effort to quash those ideas and is adamant that this side will stick to their philosophies. It’s a bold attitude for the Portuguese to adopt and one that should give the neutrals plenty to enjoy.

The Blues are made the strong 8/11 betting favourites by bookmaker Bet365, but that looks a little short given what is at stake. Instead we should look to the goals betting markets for a play on this match.

Emery has also vowed to attack the opposition and following their 7-0 thrashing of Genk in their last match they’ll certainly be in buoyant mood. If Valencia do find the back of the net then Chelsea will need to completely remove any shackles and the game will open up considerably.
