Hargreaves pleased with debut

"A little bit of the problem was a bit of misconception"

Owen Hargreaves made his Manchester City debut as they eased past Birmingham in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Manchester City and Manchester United have now been made joint-favourites in the Carling Cup betting markets as both clubs booked their place in the last 16.

United eased past Leeds on Tuesday night and were immediately cut into 4/1 with most bookmakers. Now City have joined them at that price having beaten Birmingham 2-0 at Eastlands last night.

The result itself was a subplot to the main story that was Owen Hargreaves’ debut. The former Manchester United midfielder made his first start for the club following his free transfer and marked the occasion with the opening goal of the game.

“I was happy to get on the scoresheet,” the 30-year-old told CityTV. “I don’t score many but when I do they tend to be good ones.”

Hargreaves has been out of action for the best part of three years but believes that his problems have been blown out of proportion.

“A little bit of the problem was a bit of misconception,” added the former England midfielder.

“I don’t think people would believe me when I say everything that went on.

“I’m just happy to be back playing. I would never have anticipated being out for three years.”
